Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps children to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.
This term at Star of the Sea we are implementing the Ripper Readers program for students in years 1-3 who need more opportunities to practice their reading in a one-on-one environment. I will work with the classroom teachers to see which students would benefit from this program and we will review this each term to see if other students are in need of this support as well. This will happen each Thursday and Friday afternoon in the library from 2:15pm – 2:55pm.
For this to be successful, we need parent volunteers. If you are able to spare 40 minutes either each Thursday or Friday afternoon and would like to help our students in Years 1-3 practice their reading, please email me and let me know what day suits you. We will be running a training session next Thursday and Friday at 2:30pm in the library (you only need to attend one of these) and hope to start the program in Week 3 (Thursday 9 and 10 of May).
If any grandparents are interested, we would happily accept their help. However, they need to complete the Online Volunteer Training module and have a current Blue Card.
Parents only need to complete the Online Volunteer Training module.
