Kicking Goals for Kids in Need

“I am a mission on this earth: that is the reason why I am here in this world.”  Pope Francis, 2019

Our Star of the Sea School Community took part in Socktober on Friday, an initiative of global mission aid agency Catholic Mission Australia, which raises awareness and funds for critical projects supporting vulnerable children in developing countries.

The focus for Catholic Mission this year is to build a Kindergarten in Bangkok that provides a safe learning environment for children and life-changing empowerment for their mothers.

It’s important for our students to understand why children overseas need our support, and to expose some of the root causes of poverty. In doing this, we are preparing our students to be responsible leaders of change in the future.

The soccer part of the day, especially the “sockball activity”, helps the students to understand that, while we might be more fortunate and privileged than children in Thailand, we are very similar at a fundamental level, in our love of games and sports.”

Activities our students participated in throughout the day:

  • Students were able to wear crazy socks.
  • Students made a “sockball” – a makeshift soccer ball made of recycled materials like old socks, plastic bags and rope.
  • Year level Soccer “Penalty Shoot Out” against their teachers.

Thank you to all students and staff for being involved in Socktober this year and raising much needed funds for Catholic Mission.
